Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness Overnight Use Fee Proposal #NP-2849

Commenting on This Project

The White River, Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests are proposing a new special recreation permit fee of $12 per person per night for overnight permits for areas located in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Scenic, high alpine trailed passes that connect 173 miles of Forest System trail, rich wildlife and botanic biodiversity, natural hot springs, and breathtaking fall colors, make it a unique wilderness recreation destination. The proposed fee would help cover the costs of specialized services including site restoration, increased Forest Service ranger presence, trash and human waste removal, increased local and regional outreach, and improvements to trail access, trailhead signage and information kiosks. The proposed fee would allow the Forest Service to address degraded resource conditions through the permit system’s sustainable distribution of visitors.
